Your Master’s, Better Planned: Spain, Hungary or the UK?

Study Abroad with a Career Plan: Spain, Hungary or the UK?

Choosing where to study is about more than the classroom. You may also be thinking about part-time work, the industries you could enter after graduation, your earning potential and whether you can remain in the country after completing your studies.

Spain, Hungary and the UK each offer different advantages. Here's what to consider when comparing them.

1. Spain: Study in Europe and Explore Career Opportunities

Spain allows eligible international students to work up to 30 hours per week, provided employment is compatible with their studies and meets the applicable requirements.

Which industries could you explore?

Spain has opportunities across several industries, including:

  • Technology and digital services: Software, data, cybersecurity and IT services.
  • Finance and business services: Banking, insurance, accounting and business analysis.
  • Renewable energy and engineering: Energy projects, infrastructure and technical services.
  • Tourism and hospitality: Hotels, tourism operations and customer experience.
  • Logistics and international business: Supply chains, transport and trade.

What could you earn?

Spain's official 2024 wage statistics reported average annual earnings of approximately:

  • €51,863 in financial and insurance activities.
  • €57,932 in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply.

These are industry-wide averages, not starting salaries for new graduates. Entry-level pay varies by job, location, qualifications and experience.

What happens after graduation?

Eligible graduates who meet the requirements may apply for a 24-month residence authorisation to seek suitable employment or develop a business project. This authorisation does not itself permit employment; the appropriate work or residence permission must be obtained before taking up work.

Spain could be worth exploring if you want a European study experience and are interested in technology, business, finance, engineering or other industries.

2. Hungary: Explore Flexible Study Options

Hungary offers another European study destination to consider, particularly if you're comparing tuition costs, course schedules and career possibilities.

Can you work while studying?

Non-EEA students with the relevant study residence permit may work:

  • Up to 30 hours per week during study periods.
  • Full-time for up to 90 days or 66 working days outside study periods, under the applicable rules.

However, your work schedule must fit around your course and comply with your permit conditions.

Can you study in the evenings and work during the day?

Some institutions offer programs with evening timetables. This can provide greater flexibility for students who want to organise daytime commitments around their studies.

Important: Evening classes are not available on every course or at every institution. Confirm the timetable with your chosen school before making plans around daytime employment.

Which industries could you explore?

Hungary's employment market includes opportunities across:

  • Technology: Software development, IT services and data-related roles.
  • Engineering and manufacturing: Production, quality, automation and technical operations.
  • Finance and accounting: Financial analysis, reporting and business support.
  • Logistics and supply chain: Transport, distribution and operations.
  • Business services: Customer operations, administration and multinational service centres.
  • Life sciences: Roles in relevant pharmaceutical, laboratory and technical fields.

What about graduate salaries?

Pay varies considerably by role and experience. Hungary's Hays Salary Guide provides position-specific salary ranges across technology, engineering, finance, logistics and other sectors. It is more useful to compare the expected salary for a particular occupation than to assume all graduates will earn the same amount.

After completing their studies, eligible graduates may be able to apply for a residence permit to seek a job or start a business, subject to the relevant conditions.

Hungary may suit students who want to compare European study options and investigate programs with timetables that fit their circumstances.

3. UK: Complete Many Master's Degrees in One Year

If the length and total cost of study are major considerations, the UK deserves a closer look.

Many full-time UK master's degrees take one year to complete. Compared with a similar two-year program, this may reduce the total amount spent on accommodation and everyday living expenses, although tuition fees and other costs vary by institution and course.

What does the graduate employment data show?

The latest Graduate Outcomes results, released in June 2026, reported that 87% of surveyed graduates from the 2023/24 cohort were in work or further study.

The survey collects information around 15 months after graduation. The reported median salary for UK first-degree graduates in full-time paid employment was £30,000.

These figures provide useful context, but they do not guarantee a job or salary for every international graduate. Outcomes vary by qualification, subject, occupation and location.

Which industries could you explore?

Depending on your qualification and experience, potential career areas include:

  • Technology and digital services.
  • Finance, banking and professional services.
  • Engineering, manufacturing and construction.
  • Healthcare and life sciences.
  • Education, research and public services.
  • Business, marketing and supply chain management.

Graduate salaries differ by sector and role. A salary reported for experienced workers in an industry should not be treated as the expected starting salary for a new graduate.

What visa options could allow you to stay longer?

Subject to eligibility, graduates may consider:

  • Graduate visa: Allows eligible graduates to remain in the UK after completing an eligible qualification. Applications made from 1 January 2027 are generally for 18 months for non-doctoral qualifications; doctoral graduates may receive three years.
  • Skilled Worker visa: For eligible roles with an approved sponsoring employer, subject to the relevant occupation and salary rules.
  • Global Talent visa: For eligible applicants in specified fields, such as academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
  • Innovator Founder visa: For applicants establishing an innovative, viable and scalable business with the required endorsement.

These routes have different eligibility requirements. Completing a UK qualification does not automatically qualify you for any particular visa.

Which Country Is Right for You?

There is no single best destination for every student. Your decision should reflect your intended career, budget, preferred course structure and longer-term plans.

  • Consider Spain if you're interested in European study, a range of business and technical industries, and the applicable work and post-study options.
  • Explore Hungary if you want to compare European study costs and check whether your preferred institution offers a timetable that fits your commitments.
  • Consider the UK if a one-year master's degree and the available graduate and work visa routes align with your goals.

Before deciding, compare course fees, living costs, entry requirements, realistic starting salaries and immigration conditions.
